Beth and Eric Wurzburg are two of the most positive people that you will ever meet in your life. They are the owners of East End Explorer, which offers amazing guided tours of the saltwater world of the Hamptons, whether it be on kayak, stand up paddle board or fishing boat. The service has been a great resource for parents looking to have their kids get away from their computer screens all day and really experience the world of nature in the Hamptons.

Now that the Fall is here Eric reflected with me on how his summer went with the program and what his plans are for the future.

“My wife is a professor at the University of Georgia and we pack everything up in the Fall and head there for the off season,” Eric tells me. “It’s a nice little balance. We mostly do kayaks, but we do paddle boards as well and we are building a custom boat that can navigate in 6 inches of water. That’s going to be exciting because we can venture out further and the boat can carry over 20 people.”

Their explorer camp each summer allows kids to experience new adventures in the water, make new friends, learn about nature and the environment and make lifetime memories while doing it. Not only are there guided kayaking adventures through Scallop Pond, exploring the Sebonac Estuary system and other exciting areas of the Hamptons, but they also take campers to the Stony Brook School of Marine and Atmospheric Sciences to learn about the importance of marine ecosystems.

“We’ll walk through the marsh and catch blue crabs or find clams and teach kids about the different parts of the ecosystem. The explorer camp is really exciting. We are expanding into multiple programs such as a junior exploring camp, a nature photography program and eventually a fishing program. What we are doing right now is the explorer camp program and people can sign up for it now on our website if they’d like. That program is Monday through Friday that offers up kayak tours, hands on explorations of the wildlife out here, and our boat will go out into the bay to explore new estuaries. We will do fishing off of the boat which I’m really looking forward to and once a week we will charter a large research vessel with Stony Brook and go out with their marine biologists. The kids absolutely love it.”

Eric is one of those guys who is remarkably passionate about the environment of the Hamptons. “It’s just such an awesome place to explore and to learn. It’s all about getting these kids out in the water, being with nature, learning about the area and having fun. It’s what I did as a kid growing up in the summertime in the Hamptons. I loved learning all about the little areas and buzzed around on a little ten foot boat.”

If you’re thinking about what camp to send your kids to next summer, put East End Explorer on your list. www.eastendexplorer.com
