Petersen is expected to fill the remaining term, representing Division 3  for the SCV water board which is planned to expire on Jan. 1, 2025, according to SCV Water officials.

During a special board meeting held on Aug. 29, 2022, the SCV Water Board interviewed  11 applicants to fill the vacated seat.

The seat recently became vacant after SCV Water Vice President Dan Mortensen resigned after being convicted of domestic violence.

Residents of Division 3 were invited to apply, according to officials.

Requirements were to be 18 or older and a registered voter, officials added.

Petersen was sworn in on Wednesday during the SCV Water meeting.

Petersen, P.E. is a Professional Engineer in Civil Engineering and a consulting civil Engineer.

Previously he held the position of general manager of the Valencia Water Company until the Company was dissolved into the SCV Water Agency in 2017.

During his career, Petersen held Board of Director positions related to the Santa Maria groundwater adjudication, Los Osos Groundwater litigation and Ojai Groundwater Management Agency.

In Orange County he served as a Board of Director on the South Orange County Wastewater Authority.

Petersen is set to serve on the Engineering and Operations Committee and the Finance and Administration Committee.

The position is expected to fill the remaining life of the term which ends on Jan.1, 2025 and is subject to public election in November 2024.

Any new reservoirs or desalination plants?! Plenty of $$$ for the Liberals & Jerry Brown’s high speed rail/bullet train from nowhere to nowhere!

Well, the good old boy network is alive and well within the SCV Water Board of Directors. They clearly had their minds made up before even running through the sham interviews held on the evening of August 29th. Their choice, retired former GM of Valencia Water Company Ken Petersen was unimpressive in his presentation and far from being the most compelling candidate. More importantly, the Board was derelict in their duty to augment the board with areas of weakness and need. Yes, Mr. Petersen has plenty of water utility experience but the board is already represented by that skillset. The gap in the Board is clearly on the finance side as they have lost Directors that have financial backgrounds. With this in mind the clear candidate that was most needed was Mr. Denlea. His finance background coupled with his role as a CEO and also sitting on other boards made him a much more qualified individual for the open seat. Ms. Fortner was also an excellent option as her progressive passion and knowledge of water issues would have made her a fine choice as well. The attorney K. Eric Adair in my view was another option that seemed to fill a legal gap in the Board’s makeup. Unfortunately, old friendships and alliances trumped making the decision that would have been in the public’s best interest. We should all be concerned about adequate financial oversight and risk management of this organization going forward. Looks like I’m not the only one to feel this way as 3 out of the 4 women Directors voted ‘No’ or “Abstained’. It’s unfortunate that as citizens we will have to wait for resignations or upcoming elections to clean up this Board and get people in place that are looking out for our best interests and not the best interests of their friends and fellow club members.
