San Diego’s annual Paddle for Clean Water, which raises awareness about the importance of clean oceans, is set for Sunday at the Ocean Beach Municipal Pier.

The 30th annual community event is hosted by the San Diego-based nonprofit Surfrider Foundation and typically draws hundreds of participants to raise awareness and funds to protect clean water and beaches throughout San Diego County.

The paddle, which started in 1992, welcomes participants with all kinds of paddle crafts ranging from surfboards and stand-up paddleboards to kayaks to join in a noncompetitive paddle around the Ocean Beach pier.

The free event begins at 9 a.m. with free beach yoga and breakfast for paddlers. The paddle starts at 10 a.m., followed by a group photo. Surfrider Foundation leaders and guests will give brief talks. There will be a prize drawing featuring a surfboard and Jack Johnson concert tickets. The emcee is local radio personality and longtime Surfrider supporter Chris Cantore. The event will close with a performance by a local surf rock band at noon.

Highlights include informational booths hosted by the nonprofit Surfrider Foundation’s partners, including Un Mar De Colores, San Diego River Park Foundation, Groundswell Community Group, Paddle For Peace, San Diego Coastkeeper, Run for the Sun and San Diego Community Power.

“The Paddle for Clean Water is a gathering for all San Diegans who love our coast and ocean,” said Alex Ferron, San Diego County Chapter Manager.
