We hop onto the Rivian configurator for their R1S and spec it out in the most outlandish way possible

Rivian are one of the lesser known names in the automotive world, but their ambitions are just as big as any other car company. The main focus of the company is of course electric vehicles, and they exploded onto the scene with their R1T electric pickup truck that offered some interesting styling and design choices. Their latest vehicle though is a little bit different, with the brand having gone all in with its R1S electric SUV, their very first offering in that category.

Like many manufacturers, you can configure and customize your vehicle to suit your needs and go as expensive as you want with the options. And like other manufacturers we can do this thanks to the online configurator. That got us thinking though. Just how crazy could you go with the configurator? Well, we have hopped onto the Rivian website and fired up the configurator for the R1S and gone a little bit crazy. We have specked it out as much as possible to see just how much it would cost us were we to go truly wild with the specifications.

When you first load up the configurator you are initially presented with choosing the package, the drive system, the battery pack, the color of the SUV and the wheel and tire design. The adventure package is the only one selectable right now, but we are going to pick the Quad-Motor AWD option which is an additional $8,000 and go for the larger battery pack which is worth an extra $6,000. That is the only battery pack available with the quad-motor version of the R1S.

It's then onto the color of our truck. The pricing varies as you can have a color worth an extra $1,750 and $2,500, but we have gone for the latter option with Compass Yellow our chosen color. Next it is wheels and tires, and these range from 20-inch to 22-inch. Again, we have gone bold and chosen the 22-inch Sport Dark set, which Rivian says will reduce the range of the truck by around 21 miles. That has brought the price of the vehicle up to $98,000 as we head into the next sections of the configurator. Next up is our interior color.

We’ve picked the rather outlandish Ocean Coast interior scheme that is worth $2,000 extra, mainly because it has Compass Yellow accents throughout that nicely match up with the exterior. Next it is onto the gear selections, where the price will really go up. We’ve added the $3,100 three-person tent + cargo crossbars to the Rivian, and with the color yellow to match up with our car color. Then we move onto the all-terrain additions, ranging from the $2,000 reinforced underbody shell to the $150 field kit in case of emergency. The $300 tow hooks are also included in our currently selected package.

Naturally, we add all of these. We also had the Rivian X MAXTRAX Recovery Boards for $500. Then the compact spare tire for another $550. The all-weather floor mats add an additional $225 while the off-road recovery kit also adds another $600. We also get the cargo crossbars included with the tent package. There is more though, as we add the rooftop bike mount for $280, the snowboard and ski mount for $350, the kayak mount at $240, the SUP/surfboard mount for $320 and finally the Rivian x MAXTRAX recovery board mount for $115. The final option here is the $750 Rivian wall charger, and this brings the total vehicle cost to $109,030.

Let's have a look then at what we’ve got here. We’ve got the quad-motor setup with the large battery, a Compass Yellow SUV with the 22-inch Sport Dark wheels and the Ocean Coast interior. Every single item of adventure gear is also added to our R1S, ranging from the tent, to the two hooks, and we’ve decided to throw in the wall charger too. That brings us to that pretty wild figure approaching nearly $110,000.

That then is how you get the most expensive options possible for your electric Rivian R1S SUV. And it's adding more to an already wild and ferocious machine. Remember, the R1S packs an incredible 835 hp and 908 lb-ft of torque with its 0-60 mph time just 3.0 seconds. Rivian really don’t do things by half, their pickup truck showed us exactly that. Not everyone will want to spec their Rivian SUV quite like us due to the extra cost, but it's good to go crazy once in a while, and we hope you enjoyed seeing us spec it out in this way.
